After rebuke from legislative leaders, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis pledges to veto immigration bill
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has promised to veto a sweeping immigration bill. It’s the latest escalation in a statehouse showdown between DeSantis’ office and the Republican leaders, who have sparred over whose proposals would best carry out President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. The House Speaker and Senate President tossed out DeSantis’ immigration proposals in favor of their own bill, which among other things would strip the governor of emergency enforcement powers. DeSantis has taken to cable news and social media to blast the bill as “weak” and “watered-down” compared to his ideas, which lawmakers tossed out. The morning after the measure passed, DeSantis said “the veto pen is ready”, as soon as lawmakers send him the bill.
