Brush fires on New York's Long Island have picked up quickly amid high winds. They are spewing thick gray smoke into the sky and have closed a major highway. Gov. Kathy Hochul says state agencies have responded to the fires around the Pine Barrens, a wooded area home to commuter towns east of New York City. The governor says homes, a chemical factory and an Amazon warehouse are at risk. The Town of Southampton issued a warning Saturday afternoon against starting recreational fires due to the risk. A Suffolk County spokesperson says a section of Sunrise Highway was closed.
