Some Inside Halas Hall Reportedly Pushing To Pursue Cooper Kupp
The Chicago Bears have been aggressive from the outset this off-season, securing five notable players at the cost of two draft picks and at least $50 million in cap space. GM Ryan Poles and head coach Ben Johnson have focused those resources on the trenches with center Drew Dalman, guards Joe Thuney and Jonah Jackson, defensive end Dayo Odeyingbo, and defensive tackle Grady Jarrett. This isn’t a surprise after both sides struggled last season. With that done, many wonder where the Bears turn next. Wide receiver seems like the position to watch. Keenan Allen’s departure has left a void they need to fill. Most think a modest name like Tim Patrick is the likely course. However, sources say some inside Halas Hall are urging a more aggressive move. The name sparking this is Cooper Kupp.
The former All-Pro and Super Bowl champion was released by the Los Angeles Rams on Wednesday, ending an eight-year run of outstanding success. Though he turns 32 in June, he should still be a solid weapon for whichever team he winds up with next. He would be a great replacement in the slot for Allen and has the added benefit of being a proven run-blocker.
Landing Cooper Kupp will be difficult.
The word is several teams are interested in his services, including those with more cap space to burn than the Bears. One of them is New England, which also has a promising young quarterback and way more money. Much of this depends on what Cooper Kupp is seeking. The Patriots, Chargers, and Raiders are likely the biggest threats if it’s cash. On the other hand, if he wants to land in a favorable coaching situation, Chicago might have a shot with the arrival of Ben Johnson. His reputation as a great playcaller is known across the NFL. After years with Sean McVay, Kupp may not wish to go somewhere he won’t be used correctly. The odds aren’t great, but this is something to monitor over the next few days.
