The biggest figures in horse racing in Capital Region history

For the next couple of weeks, we have shifted the Capital Region sports focus to South Dakota.

The Mount Rushmore state, where the busts of four prior presidents are carved into the mountain, is the premise for our commemoration of the greatest athletes who came out of the Capital Region. The grand reveal is Sunday, May 17, but leading up to that we examine individual sports.

Today, we continue with thoroughbred horse racing, a sport with a deep history. The criteria for this list is that those selected were born in the Capital Region or spent a great portion of their lives here. The Sport of Kings has given us a Queen, a boxer, a gutsy gelding and a man who just might go down in the history books as the best ever. Here is our final four, listed alphabetically:
