What A Successful 2025 Season Looks Like For Miguel Vargas
Before the 2025 season started, not many people were convinced that Miguel Vargas was a Major League Baseball player, as he hit .104 with a .217 OBP in 40+ games with the White Sox in the second half of the 2024 season. On top of that, he only added two homeruns and seven RBIs. This was a brutal stretch for Vargas, but he and the team were looking forward to the 2025 season.
The 2025 season didn’t get off to a great start for Vargas either, but after an adjustment in late April was made to Vargas’ hands in his batting stance, he looks like a completely different player. Prior to the season, .240 and 15 bombs would have been a successful 2025 campaign for Vargas, but now with this stretch of play, what kind of stat line would make this a winning season for Vargas?

Vargas had a fantastic game against the Texas Rangers today, as he was two for four with a homerun and a double. He had a tough play in the field towards the end of the game, but it was exaggerated by the fact that Lenyn Sosa was two feet away from the first base bag when Vargas opted to get the force out at first.
At this point in the season, Vargas is hitting .239 with a .316 OBP. He has seven homeruns, 23 RBIs, one stolen base, and has walked 18 times compared to 37 strikeouts. This is good for .9 WAR according to Baseball Reference.
Compared to last year and to the start of the season, this is a tremendous development for Vargas and the White Sox, as he looks like a completely different player over the last month plus. But, projecting out the rest of the season, based on what we’ve now seen, what would a successful end of the season stat line look like for Vargas?
Now that we’ve seen this side of Vargas, I would say that .250 with 20-25 homeruns and 65+ RBIs would be a huge win for the White Sox and Vargas. This would likely cement him into the lineup when the White Sox are good, as he could be penciled in at third or first base.
At this point what we’ve seen from Vargas has been a huge win and any other improvements would be icing on the cake. Even when Vargas goes a game without a hit, he still puts together nice at-bats and hits the ball hard. That’s all you can ask for out from a player that had a season like he did last year.
I’m very excited to see how much more Vargas can improve, as he is just 25 and has just over a season of major league at-bats under his belt, so he still has plenty of room for more improvement. The Michael Kopech, Tommy Pham, Erick Fedde three way trade continues to look better and better everyday.
