Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Dr. Shimon Sakaguchi have won the Nobel Prize in medicine for their work on peripheral immune tolerance. This discovery helps the body prevent the immune system from attacking its own tissues. Sakaguchi made the initial breakthrough in 1995, and Brunkow and Ramsdell expanded the work in 2001. Their combined work has led to new treatments for cancer and autoimmune diseases, with several undergoing clinical trials. The Nobel Assembly announced the award on Monday, marking the first of the 2025 Nobel Prize announcements. The trio will share nearly $1.2 million in prize money.
