A now-closed camp in northeast Syria saw “mass escape” of people there, raising fresh fears about Islamic State-linked security risks. On Wednesday, a Syrian Interior Ministry spokesperson said authorities found at least 133 breaches around al-Hol camp. Many escapes happened during clashes between Syrian forces and Kurdish-led fighters who had controlled the camp. Syrian forces captured the camp on Jan. 21, and the fighting later stopped after a ceasefire. Officials say al-Hol had held about 23,500 people, mostly women and children. Authorities are moving many residents to other camps and detaining anyone tied to crimes.
