Trinidad and Tobago has declared a new state of emergency as authorities in the Caribbean country struggle with a surge in violent crime. Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said in a statement Tuesday that her government has received “credible threats to attack” local law enforcement officers. Trinidad and Tobago has spent roughly 10 of the last 14 months under a state of emergency, with the last one ending Jan. 31. A state of emergency gives authorities additional powers, including authorization to make arrests and conduct searches without warrants.
