Officials in northern India say at least 10 people have died after an overcrowded tourist boat capsized in the Yamuna river. Officials say the incident happened on Friday near the Hindu temple town of Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh state. Senior administrative officer Chandraprakash Singh said that 15 people were rescued, with four in critical condition. The boat, meant for about 15 passengers, was carrying around 25 when it overturned. Preliminary findings suggest strong winds caused the vessel to sway before hitting a pontoon bridge. Most passengers were not wearing life jackets. Boating accidents are common in India, where many vessels are overcrowded and have inadequate safety equipment. In 2023, a tourist boat capsized in southern India, killing at least 22 people.
