The 10 best Sonic the Hedgehog fangames
In 1999, Sega redesigned their mascot for Sonic Adventure. But while Mario games still use simple narratives, Sonic insists on bloating its stories. Things really began to get bad in 1999’s Sonic Adventure, when all of a sudden Sonic and his friends began living in a modern world filled with human civilians. Generations did an excellent job on iterating on the progress the series had made with Colors & Unleashed, combining it with Sonic’s gameplay routes to create the most complete feeling modern Sonic game to date.
The Knuckles-augmented threequel is both the character’s finest hour, and our favorite way to play Sonic 3 itself. The original game was designed with the intention of featuring Knuckes as a core character, and the three-way ability divide between Sonic, Tails and Knuckles is one of the add-on’s biggest overhauls. The separate games deserves spots on this list, but they work best in tandem. The titles survive on Nintendo’s Virtual Consoles and various compilations; and on the shelves of the nation’s thrift stores, just waiting to be dusted off by the right lucky retro-friendly hoarder. If you’ve played the guts out of the Genesis versions of Sonics 1, 2 and 3, you probably see yourself as quite the arbiter of all things old-school and Sega. - Some people may be thinking of Sonic Labyrinth on the Game Gear or Sonic R on the Sega Saturn but those games have at least some redeeming qualities.
- I’ve never been a fan of the Sonic games exactly because the originals never seemed to have much depth aside from “go fast”.
- Of course the Fast list can’t be complete without the first game, which was released on June 22, 1991 on the Genesis (Coincidence? I think not) which rivaled Nintendo’s Super Nintendo and Super Mario World.
Kids my age didn’t know any of the history that Sonic had, positive or negative. We just saw a new and exciting game with screenshots that made us want to play it. Sonic Adventure 1 is the one I played the most over and over. “the sonic games on emulatorgames.online best 3D sonic game” tends to usually be Sonic Colors. A lot of problem that people complain about in Unleashed don’t feel like problem to me. The level design and aesthetics are great, the wisps were well-executed, and the sound track is top-notch.

Of course, we wouldn’t have any of the games in this list without the original Sonic The Hedgehog title. Sonic is one of the most famous gaming mascots of all time.
