Japan fleet kills 333 whales in Antarctic hunt

Japanese whalers returned to port Thursday after an Antarctic hunt that killed more than 300 of the mammals, the government said. The fleet had set sail for the Southern Ocean in December, despite a worldwide moratorium and opposition led by Australia and New Zealand.

Initial jobless claims will be out at 8:30 a.m. ET.

Economists are expecting claims to rise slightly to 269,000.

Last week, claims rose less than expected to to 265,000, below expectations of 268,000.

Meanwhile, the four-week moving average was 268,000, an increase of 750 from the previous week's revised average.

Claims have run under 300,000 for 54 straight weeks — the longest streak since 1973 — as the labor market continues to accelerate towards full employment. Читать дальше...
