MEXICO CITY — An explosion killed 13 people and injured scores at a petrochemical plant on Mexico’s southern gulf coast, forcing evacuations as a fire billowed a huge toxin-filled cloud into the air. The head of Mexico’s civil defense agency, Luis Felipe Puente, wrote on his Twitter account Thursday that emergency personnel had been able to enter the burned-out plant and found 10 more cadavers. The Dow industrials and S&P 500 closed lower Thursday, snapping a three-day rally Thursday, as crude prices and defensive sectors declined. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 113.75 points, or 0.6%, to close at 17,982.52. The S&P 500 Index closed down 10.92 points, or 0.5%, at 2,091.48, led lower by the telecom, utilities, and consumer-staples sectors. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 2.24 points to close at 4,945.89. Crude oil futures for June settled 2.3% lower at $43.18 a barrel.

For two years, SpyEye was the world's most destructive piece of malware targeting banks and financial institutions, infecting more than 50 million PCs and causing estimated damage of $1 billion. The malware, created by a young Russian hacker who liked to brag of its malevolence, was secretly installed on victims' computers, spread via spam emails and malicious websites, and worked by silently stealing the banking and credit card details of millions of people.

President Barack Obama mourned pop-music icon Prince, who died suddenly on Thursday at 57.

In a statement, the president praised the musician's virtuosity and artistic vision.

"Today, the world lost a creative icon. Michelle and I join millions of fans from around the world in mourning the sudden death of Prince," Obama said. "Few artists have influenced the sound and trajectory of popular music more distinctly, or touched quite so many people with their talent."

"Rachel and I are honored to support the legacy of all who have advanced the enriching and empowering mission of Trotter since its founding — the generations of U-M students who have been activists for diversity, and the current U-M students whose advocacy helped guide the vision for this new building," Bernstein said in a statement.
