WEST COVINA, Calif. (AP) — The hunt is on for man suspected of shooting and wounding a West Covina police officer. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said Saturday that 47-year-old Jose Luis Chavez is wanted on suspicion of attempted murder of an on-duty officer and is considered armed and dangerous. Investigators believe Chavez fired several rounds around 11:20 p.m. Friday after the officer tried to detain him. The officer was shot in the chest and was taken to a hospital. BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A woman accused of beating a man with a coffee mug is facing two charges in federal court. Vanessa Taylor, of Fort Yates, has pleaded not guilty to assault with intent to commit murder and assault with a dangerous weapon. Authorities say the incident happened in March on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. Trial is scheduled for July 18. A federal public defender could not be reached for comment.
