Watershed Council receives $148,834 OWEB grant

SWEET HOME — The Oregon Watershed Enhancement Board has chosen the South Santiam Watershed Council to receive a Salmon License Plate grant of $148,834, according to Eric Hartstein, senior policy coordinator at OWEB.

The first telescope to photograph a "pale blue dot" of another Earth in a distant solar system may not be funded by NASA, the European Space Agency, or some other government agency.

It might come from Kickstarter.

Dubbed Project Blue, the effort isn't run by hucksters out to peddle unrealistic technologies. A consortium of professional scientists and engineers, some of whom work at NASA, is running the show as a nonprofit called Mission Centaur.

Manufacturing in New York picks up slightly

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York says its Empire State index rose to a reading of 1.5 this month, up from minus 6.8 in October. New orders and shipments turned positive this month, but manufacturers still appear to have shed workers and cut back on hours. The Institute for Supply Management says its manufacturing index came in at 51.9 in October.
