Charming Chip: Kelly’s recruiting helped 49ers land CFL WR
Chip Kelly’s recruiting background came in handy last week on his first day as the 49ers head coach. Rogers received 13 offers after visiting 16 NFL teams. On Dec. 18, he visited the Eagles and met with Kelly, who was still their head coach. Rogers, 24, led the CFL with 1,448 receiving yards, tied for the league lead in receiving touchdowns (10) and was third in receptions (87) last season with the Calgary Stampeders. If the 49ers don’t re-sign Anquan Boldin, Torrey Smith and Jerome Simpson would be the only wideouts on the team with more than 36 career receptions. Simpson, 29, who had five receptions in five games last year, isn’t guaranteed to make the 53-man roster. Rogers, who seriously mulled offers from the Vikings and Jets, said the 49ers raised their initial contract offer, suggesting Kelly might have also influenced the 49ers front office.
