Islanders’ Kyle Okposo has hat trick in rout

Kyle Okposo had a hat trick after the Islanders opened a big lead with three first-period goals as host New York defeated the Edmonton Oilers 8-1 on Sunday afternoon.

Thomas Greiss made 30 saves for the Islanders, who moved three points behind the Rangers for second place in the Metropolitan Division.

Johnny Boychuck, John Tavares and Nikolay Kulemin scored in the opening period, chasing goalie Anders Nilsson, who was replaced by Cam Talbot.

“Kyle has been playing awesome,” said Islanders defenseman Nick Leddy, who had three assists.

Alex Ovechkin scored to join Wayne Gretzky and Mike Gartner as the only players in NHL history with 30 or more goals in each of their first 11 seasons as host Washington beat Philadelphia.

Ben Scrivens stopped all five Carolina shooters, including Eric Staal on the final attempt, to give the Canadiens consecutive wins for the first time since Nov. 25 and 27.

BOSTON — Boston Bruins goaltending prospect Malcolm Subban is in stable condition at a Boston hospital after fracturing his larynx before an American Hockey League game Saturday.
