The Latest: Former Mayor Buddy Cianci laid to rest
Former Mayor Joseph Paolino, Cianci's close friend and onetime bitter political rival, delivered words of remembrance.
Paolino says Cianci devoted himself to a worthy cause— propelling Providence to great prominence, often at the expense of his relationships and health.
Paolino recalled one of Cianci's campaign slogans, "that he never stopped caring about Providence."
Paolino says he hopes Cianci is looking down with pride, knowing that the people of Providence will never stop caring about him.
Residents placed the signs down Atwells Avenue in anticipation of Cianci's casket being driven slowly through after his funeral Monday morning.
Providence police officers and firefighters lined the steps of city hall as Cianci's casket was brought out and placed onto the carriage.
Cianci's casket will be removed from City Hall Monday morning and brought through the city by horse-drawn carriage to the cathedral, where the Roman Catholic Bishop of Providence will preside over his funeral.
Since his death, Cianci has been remembered as one of America's most colorful and skilled retail politicians, who became known nationally for one-liners, endless TV appearances and his own brand of pasta sauce.
