Class of few returns: 49ers won’t have most of vets they signed in ‘15
Reggie Bush reiterated Saturday that he won’t retire, but it’s unlikely the 30-year-old running back coming off a torn MCL will return to the 49ers.
The 49ers will probably begin the 2016 regular season without the majority of the veterans they signed during last year’s offseason.
The group did so little that general manager Trent Baalke lumped it with the zero-impact 2012 draft class last month when acknowledging some of the misfires on his resume.
The 49ers have the third-most salary cap space in the NFL and a roster with plenty of areas to address.
Here’s a look at those signings (listed in chronological order):
After serving a season-opening, six-game suspension, he had five catches for 54 yards and a touchdown in six games.
Per Pro Football Focus, 49ers quarterbacks had a 116.9 passer rating when targeting Smith, but he had a career-low 62 targets (previous low: 92).
Wright has one interception in 55 career regular-season games.
The unexpected exit of Anthony Davis in June made Pears the starting right tackle and he struggled mightily in the role.
Pears, 33, isn’t guaranteed to make the 53-man roster given the likely return of Davis and the performance of tackle Trent Brown, a rookie seventh-round pick who had a promising NFL debut.
Wheeler signed with the Falcons on Oct. 20 and had 21 tackles in nine games (2 starts).
