Giants will have backup-catcher competition
The Giants have few jobs up for grabs this spring, but one of the few competitions, for backup catcher, promises to be intriguing.
Andrew Susac’s solid play as a rookie in 2014 seemed to suggest a long tenure in that role, but his hitting nosedived in 2015 before he underwent surgery in September to repair a sprained right wrist and remove bone chips.
Susac should have a leg up given his experience, but a leg up does not mean a guaranteed job.
“We’re going to keep things competitive here,” manager Bruce Bochy said.
In what is becoming an annual rite, the Giants are going to ease reliever Sergio Romo into spring work.
Romo is being held back from throwing bullpens, which the other pitchers either did Thursday or will do Friday.
Johnny Cueto spent the first 6½ years of his career with the Reds, in the National League.
After Bochy revealed he had shoulder surgery Monday, the just-retired reliever texted to say the manager simply wanted to get out of throwing batting practice, to which Bochy responded, “You’re coming here to throw B.P., just like you did in games for us.”
