Joe Rahon’s jumper lifts St. Mary’s over Portland
Joe Rahon banked home a leaning, 12-foot jumper with three seconds left to give St. Mary’s a 74-72 win at Portland on Thursday night, keeping the Gaels a game back of Gonzaga atop the WCC.
The score was tied with a minute to go before Rahon fed Dane Pineau for a layup and the Gaels were up 72-70.
On the ensuing possession, Gabe Taylor got fouled on a rebound attempt.
Rahon dribbled much of the time off the shot clock before driving to his right and nailing the winning jumper.
After Alec Wintering’s long three-point try was off the mark, the Gaels could set their sights on Saturday’s matchup in Spokane against the Zags, who routed Pacific 90-68 on Thursday.
Ronnie Boyce came off the bench to score 25 points and Devin Watson added 21, helping the Dons (15-11, 8-7) top the Waves (16-11, 9-7) in Malibu.
Jared Brownridge scored 23 of his game-high 26 points in the second half as the visiting Broncos (10-17, 6-9) overcame a 12-point deficit to knock off the Lions (11-16, 4-12).
Stella Beck had 20 points and nine rebounds as the host Gaels (20-6, 11-4) cruised past the Zags (17-10, 9-6).
At the Leavey Center, Taylor Berry scored 15 points, and Lori Parkinson and Morgan McGwire had 14 apiece as the Broncos (20-6, 11-4) hammered the Lions (9-18, 5-11).
Rachel Howard poured in 29 points, going 10-for-12 from the floor (6-for-7 from beyond the arc) as the Dons (16-10, 7-8) overpowered the Waves (6-21, 2-14) on the Hilltop.
