Skier killed in Squaw Valley fall had ‘fierce passion for life’
A mother of four killed in a skiing accident at Squaw Valley Resort lived for three decades in Belvedere Island’s iconic “Pink House” and died doing what she loved, her daughter said.
The mother of four children — Rachael, Sasza , Meredith, and David — had spent the last few years living permanently at Olympic Valley in Placer County, where she took part in the ski resort’s Masters race training program, Lohrey said
According to her coaches, she skied rain or shine, all day.
Danel’s daughter also said her mother lived in the iconic “Pink House” on Belvedere Island for 30 years before she put the 8,000-square-foot waterfront home on the market in 2012 and eventually sold it.
Danel was skiing in the Headwall area Saturday when the fatal fall occurred, said Liesl Kenney, a spokeswoman for the resort.
“The guest was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident, and was unconscious and unresponsive when ski patrol arrived on scene, at which time CPR was immediately administered,” Kenney said.
On behalf of everyone at Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, we would like to extend our heartfelt sympathy to this individual’s family and friends.
Lohrey and her siblings described their mother as “fearless” and a strong environmentalist with a “fierce passion for life.”
