Giants’ Joe Panik feeling and playing well as spring progresses

A young player, in only his second season, sidelined with a serious back injury seemed like a red flag. Panik, after an offseason of rehabilitation, says he has no cause for concern. On Thursday at Maryvale Baseball Park in Phoenix, Panik went 3-for-3 against the Brewers, and accounted for the Giants’ first two runs in their 3-1 win. Panik scored a run after hitting a double to left in the first inning, and drove in Angel Pagan with a long, hard-hit double to center field. Panik didn’t get too down about his injury, which was a stress fracture in the L5 vertebra. [...] he signed a contract with the Giants. Bruce Bochy said Matt Cain threw a 15-pitch bullpen Thursday morning, Cain’s first action since having a cyst removed in late February. ... Span, who has been only a designated hitter to this point, said his hip has been fine running the bases, but he wants to take it slow with his shoulder. Hunter Pence is scheduled to see his first game action of the spring Friday against the Mariners. ... Joe Panik went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, his second three-hit game of the week. ... Starter Chris Stratton, the Giants’ first round pick in 2012, went three innings without giving up a hit, walking one and striking out two. Manager Bruce Bochy said he expects Stratton to be a starter in Triple-A. ... In the first inning, Brandon Belt was hit on the right hand by a pitch. Belt has had a broken wrist and a broken thumb. ... Kelby Tomlinson, who played second base for the Giants last year after Panik’s injury but spent most of his minor-league career at shortstop, started at shortstop and made several impressive plays.
