Giants tell Matt Cain not to rush return
Manager Bruce Bochy made his strongest statement yet Saturday that Matt Cain might not be ready for his first scheduled regular-season start against the Dodgers on April 8.
Bochy made the statement to reporters, but not before he told Cain not to throw his arm into fifth gear simply to make that start.
“I’ve already talked to Matty about this,” Bochy said after the Giants dropped two games.
Cain sounds as though he got Bochy’s message, saying, If we miss one (start) to be able to go the rest of the season and not be worried about anything again, that’s what we’ll have to do.
Santiago Casilla appeared in his first Cactus League game after a nasty flu set him back a week.
Casilla struck out two of his four hitters, getting Arizona leadoff hitter Chris Owings to look at a curveball for strike three to end the inning.
Pitching coach Dave Righetti said I looked more comfortable.
