Still life inspires motion at ODC Theater

American still life paintings from the de Young Museum inspired the talented duo of Lauren Simpson and Jenny Stulberg to create the fascinating series of duets and group dances titled “Still Life Dances.”

Previous “Still Life Dance” performances have taken place in museums and galleries as well as onstage, but whatever the setting, Simpson and Stulberg have offered studies of movement and composition both thoughtful and exhilarating, imaginative and yet often subtle.

In this latest work, they incorporate a set consisting of a flat wall, against which dancers Arletta Anderson, Virginia Broyles, Liane Burns and Stulberg play out curious spatial juxtapositions with intriguing, thought-provoking and occasionally humorous results.
