A’s Danny Valencia calls hamstring injury ‘mild’
NEW YORK — Third baseman Danny Valencia won’t play Thursday in New York after leaving with a mild left hamstring strain in the fourth inning Wednesday, but he hopes he’ll be back soon.
Valencia was injured on a play at home, but, he said, the problem occurred when he popped up from the plate, not while sliding in to try to get past catcher Brian McCann.
Valencia had no trouble with getting sent from third on Yonder Alonso’s flyball to left, despite outfielder Aaron Hicks’ strong arm; the throw was clocked at 105.5 mph, tops recorded by Statcast since outfield-throw velocities began to be tracked in 2015.
“He has to make a perfect, almost unheard of throw to get me — and he did,” Valencia said.
Manager Bob Melvin said that third-base coach Ron Washington is going to err on the aggressive side.
Should the team need to add a third baseman, Tyler Ladendorf or Max Muncy would figure to be the most likely option.
Infielder Eric Sogard is likely to miss four to six weeks after left knee surgery.
Sogard had surgery Wednesday in Pensacola, Fla., with Dr. James Andrews performing the procedure.
The A’s did not have specifics of the surgery, but with no ligament damage to be repaired, Sogard is not expected to need a lengthy rehab process.
Henderson Alvarez (shoulder) threw three innings in his first rehab appearance with Class A Stockton, allowing three hits and one run.

Jesse Hahn, a good bet to rejoin Oakland’s rotation soon, allowed three hits, two walks and one run in 21/3 innings, a planned shorter outing because of recent rainouts.
