A’s Kendall Graveman has big night, Oakland wins 4th in a row
NEW YORK — Kendall Graveman made his first career appearance at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday, something of a thrill for a young player.
[...] after third baseman Danny Valencia left with a hamstring strain and the A’s lost their designated hitter, Graveman also became the first starting pitcher ever to have an at-bat at the new Yankee Stadium.
The A’s have won all five of their road games this season and they’re on a four-game winning streak overall.
Graveman went 61/3 innings and allowed three hits, three walks and one run.
Using his cutter and curveball a lot, he struck out a career-high eight while ending his six-decision losing streak.
When Valencia was injured on a play at the plate in the fourth, Coghlan moved from second to third and Jed Lowrie, who’d been serving as the DH, moved to second base.
Coghlan justified the decision with a heads-up play in the seventh when, with runners at second and third and one out, he fielded a chopper by Hicks, tagged Didi Gregorius going from second to third and then threw to first to get Aaron Hicks.
Oakland scored two more in the eighth when Khris Davis, submerged in a terrible slump, knocked a bases-loaded single up the middle.
Davis had struck out in two of his first three at-bats, giving him 20 strikeouts overall.
