Low number of arrests but plenty of trash at SF’s 4/20 smoke out
San Francisco’s annual weed party went down with relatively few arrests after thousands packed Golden Gate Park’s Sharon Meadow and Hippie Hill, leaving heaps of trash after the annual 4/20 celebration.
The smell of rotting and wet garbage filled the air Thursday morning as a few dozen workers with trash pickers scoured Sharon Meadow for the smaller bits of debris.
All told, there were eight arrests made at the day-long smoke out, which Officer Carlos Manfredi, a police spokesman, said was pretty tame for an event that brings a menagerie of characters from all over the Bay Area, state and country.
Two people were arrested for felony warrants, Manfredi said, and five others were arrested for misdemeanors ranging from public intoxication to battery to resisting arrest.
About 5:45 p.m., hundreds of people started running from the area of Hippie Hill as rumors spread that a man on the hill was waving a gun.
A shooting was reported about six blocks from the celebration around 5:30 p.m. near Warren Drive and Locksley Avenue when a parked car was struck by several bullets, but Manfredi said no victim or suspect was found at the scene and there were no reports of anyone checking into local hospitals with gunshot wounds.
