Giants’ Santiago Casilla ‘apologized for my outburst’
PHOENIX - Giants closer Santiago Casilla walked into manager Bruce Bochy’s office Friday.
In a postgame interview, Casilla said Bochy “didn’t have faith in me” and that he should have been told why he was being removed, adding, It’s not a kid out there.
What changed?
“A lot of times, you let your emotions get the best of you,” Casilla said through interpreter Erwin Higueras.
Having thought about it overnight, I realize I have to respect my manager.
Casilla agreed that summoning Javier Lopez to face lefty swinging Jake Lamb for the final out was the right move.
Catcher Buster Posey spoke with Casilla Friday and said the closer was remorseful.
A lot of people in here know Casilla really well.
[...] my goodness, he wants the ball in his hand.
Again, he probably would have handled it differently if he could go back on it now.
Bochy said Casilla remains his closer and would be available in a save situation Friday.
“It’s over,” the manager said several times of the episode.
There were times (in past years) he had no chance to throw runners out.
With the staff we have now, you like your chances.
Reliever George Kontos (flexor strain) is expected to join the Giants when they open a series Tuesday in San Diego.
John Shea is a San Francisco Chronicle staff writer.
Stop sign:
The only other pitcher to win his first eight decisions against the Giants (since they moved West in 1958) was Mike Hampton, who won his first 10 and wound up 16-4 against them.
