Giants beat Diamondbacks, no controversy this time
The Giants beat the Diamondbacks 3-1 in textbook fashion, featuring Jeff Samardzija’s eight strong innings, Joe Panik’s three-run homer and Santiago Casilla’s two-out save.
With one out in the ninth, Bochy summoned Casilla one night after Casilla’s eruption on the mound stemming from his discontent over Bochy pulling him with the bases loaded and two outs.
Friday, Lamb was the first hitter in the ninth, and Bochy called on lefty Josh Osich, who got Lamb to bounce to third baseman Matt Duffy, who made a nice on-the-run throw across the diamond.
In the sixth inning, Bochy’s “double leadoff hitter” alignment came up, and Angel Pagan — who missed 11 games with a hamstring strain — was the first batter and singled.
Denard Span followed with a single, and the runners advanced on Shelby Miller's wild pitch.
With a 3-0 count and first base open, Miller grooved a fastball that Panik deposited well over the right-field wall.
Beyond the three-run rally, the Giants didn’t threaten much and bounced into five double plays, two shy of the team record set in 1969.
The Giants chased Miller six batters into the sixth inning, and perhaps the pitcher was fatigued after racing around the bases in the fifth.
On consecutive nights, Johnny Cueto and Samardzija — signed in the offseason for a combined $220 million — beat the Diamondbacks, the team that signed Greinke for $206.5 million.
