Ed Johnson wins Alcatraz Stakes

With wins in both of his previous 1-mile grass races, Ed Johnson held a significant advantage over his four opponents in the $75,000 Alcatraz Stakes for 3-year-olds Sunday at Golden Gate Fields.

Admiral Boom, Pure Comedy and He’s a Tiger hadn’t raced on grass or around two turns, and Land of Oz finished fifth against much weaker competition in his only try in such a race.

After a modest first quarter-mile in 24.18 seconds, Ed Johnson sped the next two quarters in 23.22 and 23.74 seconds, respectively, which discouraged any hopes his rivals had of catching up.

“Man, I couldn’t have picked a better weekend to come back, huh?” jockey Russell Baze yelled after bringing Ed Johnson to the winner’s circle.

According to trainer Steve Specht, the key to Ed Johnson is rationing his speed.

Ed Johnson had a severe quarter crack (cracked hoof) after breaking his maiden Sept. 27, and he didn’t return until an allowance event April 16.
