Joseph Bertolozzi, ‘Tower Music’ review
Joseph Bertolozzi’s irresistible “Tower Music” arrived as the perfect analgesic to soothe the pain of re-entry after a Parisian vacation.
Bertolozzi assembled a vast catalog of these sampled tones, and in the nine movements of “Tower Music” he deploys them to create a witty and often beautiful array of rhythmic grooves and harmonic rhapsodies, as if Steve Reich had been set loose on a giant Erector set.
The Eiffel Tower as the piece’s source is a bit of a gimmick, but it’s a charming one, and the piece’s allure really comes from the vigor and inventiveness of Bertolozzi’s musical imagination. —
