Magowan says A’s must handle stadium issue on own
If Peter Magowan were baseball’s commissioner, the Giants’ former kingpin said Monday, he’d do exactly what former Commissioner Bud Selig and current Commissioner Rob Manfred did in trying to resolve the A’s stadium issue.
Years ago, the Giants’ own stadium issue seemed to be one of those intractable issues.
[...] Magowan led a group that bought the team, kept it from being moved to Florida and helped spearhead construction of a privately funded ballpark that has become one of the landmarks of San Francisco’s waterfront.
The induction dinner at the Westin St. Francis had the misfortune of going up against Game 1 of the Warriors-Thunder series, but the event raised approximately $200,000 for local youth programs, organizers said.
Magowan, the former managing general partner of the Giants, is still part of the club’s management, and he supported its fight against the A’s now-moribund efforts to move to San Jose.
If you had put a team a few miles away from where the heart of our franchise is, we would lose fans and sponsors, no question about it.
Chester, who has lived in Oakland more than 40 years, isn’t giving up on the city’s chances of keeping the Raiders.
Sporting the Super Bowl XV ring for the championship he helped the team win after the 1980 season, he said, “I happen to know that the Raider organization would like to stay in Oakland, but it’s still business.”
