A’s Canha opts to have season-ending hip surgery
Mark Canha had a strong rookie season that included 16 homers and 70 RBIs, but he won’t take the field with the A’s again this year.
The outfielder-first baseman, who is from San Jose and played at Cal, said Tuesday that he will have hip surgery next week.
Canha got a second opinion Monday that confirmed that he has excess bone growth at the top of his left femur that must be shaved down.
Philippon’s past patients include Tim Lincecum, Alex Rodriguez, Troy Tulowitzki, Kurt Warner, Greg Norman and Mario Lemieux.
“It’s a tough loss, but at least this way it won’t affect his season next year, and if he were to try to get through this thing and it didn’t work, you’re looking at next year, too,” manager Bob Melvin said.
There had been thought that Canha might try a cortisone shot first, but Canha said the risks were too great with such a shot and, he said, I was leaning toward the surgery because I knew how bad it felt.
The fact it didn’t get better with rest and rehab made me think cortisone wouldn’t be the best choice.
The second opinion confirmed surgery would be the best option.
Left-handers Eric Surkamp and Sean Manaea have had hip surgeries and recovered fully.
Melvin said that right-hander Henderson Alvarez got an MRI exam Tuesday for shoulder discomfort incurred in what was expected to be his final rehab outing Sunday.
Early indications suggested perhaps it was a minor setback, common after shoulder surgery.

Utility player Max Muncy, recalled Tuesday, said he’s a different player now — he’s bunting and stealing bases.
