Henderson Alvarez’s status still iffy for A’s
An MRI exam on Henderson Alvarez’s surgically repaired right shoulder was inconclusive, according to manager Bob Melvin, and the team is now waiting for Dr. James Andrews, who performed the surgery July 28, to review the results.
Melvin said that Alvarez will continue to receive treatment for his shoulder discomfort and that there is no timetable for his return.
Alvarez did play catch on Wednesday, and, “He felt OK,” Melvin said.
The fact that there was no clear indication of a significant injury “does give you some optimism,” Melvin said.
Alvarez left his final scheduled rehab start an inning early Sunday.
The A’s had planned to insert the 2014 All-Star into the rotation this week against the Yankees.
[...] baseman Jed Lowrie ran for the second day in a row and said he believes he’ll get at least one rehab game before coming off the disabled list when eligible May 25.
The one he was wearing when he fouled a ball off his leg May 9 dented on impact and didn’t protect the area adequately.
Marcus Semien made an excellent play on a grounder to deep short by Adrian Beltre in the first, and in the fifth, third baseman Danny Valencia sprinted toward the Oakland dugout for a foul pop by Nomar Mazara and made a sliding grab in front of the steps.
In the ninth, after Texas had taken a one-run lead, first baseman Yonder Alonso cut off a throw home from Billy Burns and nailed Mazara at the plate to end the inning.
Melvin called Valencia’s catch “a tough play,” noting that while Valencia makes an occasional throwing error, “When we need a big play made, he’s been up for the task.”

Khris Davis said that he got a “sugar rush” from getting a pie to the face and a Gatorade soaking after his walk-off grand slam Tuesday.
“I still smelled like whipped cream on the ride home,” he said.
