Madison Bumgarner’s perfect strikeout-to-walk ratio
Madison Bumgarner’s perfect strikeout-to-walk ratio
SAN DIEGO - Much was made of Madison Bumgarner’s emotional episode with Wil Myers Tuesday night, and perhaps not enough was made of his performance.
For just the third time in his career, he threw a complete game while collecting double-digit strikeouts with no walks.
“When a guy strikes out 10-plus and has no walks, that catches your eye,” catcher Buster Posey said.
The ace is pitching his best ball of the season.
In six starts, he has a 1.69 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 42 2/3 innings, but he admitted after his start he’s still not fully in sync mechanically.
Bumgarner has had 27 career starts with 10 or more strikeouts, nine of which with zero walks, three coming as complete games.
[...] this from the Elias Sports Bureau:
For the first time since 1893, a Giant and Dodger struck out 11 batters without issuing a walk on the same day.
“He’s got to have all his pitches working, and there’s a lot of deception going on to go through the lineup three or four times and have the swings and misses and guys taking strikes,” Posey said of his batterymate.
[...] to not have the walks, it means that ‘effectively wild’ slogan kind of goes out the window.
The dustup with Myers, coming after the Padres’ first baseman struck out to end the third inning, didn’t sidetrack Bumgarner, who retired the next eight batters until Myers’ double in the sixth.
“It doesn’t seem to bother him,” Posey said.
