Durant did his job, but got little help in Thunder loss
Oklahoma City coach Billy Donovan stressed before Game 2 of the Western Conference finals that the key for his team was getting contributions across the board.
Donovan and the Thunder will fly back to the Midwest with the series tied 1-1 and that goal still on the to-do list.
Oklahoma City got its nightly big game output from Kevin Durant (29 points), but Russell Westbrook tumbled back to mortal status with a 16-point, 5-of-14 shooting game, and no one else on the Thunder managed to score more than nine in a lopsided 118-99 loss.
“Obviously, with the way that Golden State played tonight, we’ll have to play better,” said Donovan, whose team lost for only the fourth time this postseason.
Durant scored 23 points in the first half, but added only six in the second half when he had more turnovers (three) than field goals (two).
“They were sending three guys,” said Durant of the Warriors’ defensive adjustment.
In the first three quarters, the three Oklahoma City starters not named Durant or Westbrook had combined to score 17 points, only slightly more than the 13 the Thunder bench produced.
In Game 1, the Thunder had five players in double figures, including Dion Waiters, who came off the bench to hit 4-of-6 shots — two of them three-pointers — and score 10.
