Giants’ Pence, Pagan both out with hamstring injuries
Last fall, the Giants had Kelby Tomlinson play two weeks worth of center field in the Arizona instructional league.
“Middle school,” he said after digging deep into his memory bank for the answer.
Tomlinson will be in left field Saturday (see original post below) because two regular outfielders have barking hamstrings.
Angel Pagan’s left hammy, the one that landed him on the disabled list earlier this season, is sore and Hunter Pence has soreness behind his right knee.
Manager Bruce Bochy said neither injury appears serious and both are available to pinch-hit with an eye toward playing Sunday.
The Giants always err on the side of caution with ailments like this because they cannot afford to lose either outfielder.
Bochy said he noticed something amiss with Pence during the series in San Diego.
The Giants have only four outfielders on the roster, but Jarrett Parker and Mac Williamnson know the route to AT&T Park if either injury lingers.
The Giants’ unusual lineup is listed at the bottom of this post.
[...] we’ll find out why, but manager Bruce Bochy might want a little more speed in the lineup against Lester, who has a mental block throwing the ball to first base.
Ross has an excellent pickoff move to first and players are reluctant to take big leads.
Buster Posey is at first base, Brandon Belt is off and Matt Duffy, who singled Friday to break a 21-at-bat hitless streak, has been dropped from third to fifth, with Hunter Pence off.
