Tomlinson handles left field just fine
Kelby Tomlinson had to dig deep into his memory to remember the last time he played the outfield in a game that counted.
“Middle school,” he said after a long pause.
Tomlinson played all nine innings in left Saturday because two of the Giants’ four outfielders, Angel Pagan and Hunter Pence, were nursing minor hamstring injuries.
The Giants had Tomlinson play about a dozen games in center field in the fall instructional league.
Tomlinson admitted his play there was “a little rough.”
Tomlinson did not seem frightened about making his outfield debut on national TV.
“It’s still baseball,” he said.
Tomlinson handled both flyballs hit to him.
Pence’s hamstring:
Bruce Bochy did not need Pence to say the words.
The manager knew something was amiss watching his always hustling right fielder run to first base on a groundball in San Diego.
Bochy asked and Pence confessed he had pain behind his right knee, a sore hamstring.
“You know how he’s always busting down the line,” Bochy said.
