Bumgarner not at his best in loss to Padres
Bumgarner pitched a one-hit shutout in the first-half finale but wasn’t nearly as effective in the second-half opener, giving up four runs and two homers and experiencing several heated moments with San Diego players.
Brandon Belt struck out in the ninth inning, slammed his bat on the plate, complained to umpire Mike Estabrook and got ejected for the first time in his career.
Manager Bruce Bochy then yelled at Estabrook about his strike zone in general and got tossed.
In the fourth inning, shortly after Bumgarner gave up a home run to Adam Rosales, he had words for Travis Jankowski.
Bumgarner fielded Jankowski’s bunt and made a nice play to flip the ball with his glove to first base to end the inning.
In the fifth, Padres starter Andrew Cashner threw a fastball that drilled Ramiro Peña on the back, and Bumgarner saw it close up as the on-deck hitter.
When he got to the plate, he and catcher Derek Norris had an animated chat.
Bumgarner said in-game dust-ups used to affect his performance, adding he has learned to move on.
Bumgarner was the sixth pitcher at an All-Star break with a sub-2.00 ERA while averaging more than 10 strikeouts per nine innings He finished the first half with a 1.94 ERA.
Three days after teammate Johnny Cueto gave up two homers at Petco Park in the All-Star Game, Bumgarner did the same.
The Giants’ only run came when Brandon Crawford doubled and scored on Conor Gillaspie’s single.
Throughout the first half, Bumgarner was followed by Cueto in the rotation, but Cueto’s workload in the All-Star Game prompted Bochy to push him back to Sunday, sliding Jeff Samardzija (Saturday’s pitcher) between the co-aces.
