Walnut Creek swoons for “Hamilton’s” Odom

0

Odom, who left New York’s Richard Rodgers Theater with one of those Tonys in hand--for best actor in a musical--brought his solo act to Walnut creek, admitting that he and his five-man combo were still working on the show.

“You’re at the beginning of something,” he told the audience, after having said that the development of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “Hamilton” was the most exciting phase of experience for him.

Odom walked onto the stage of the Lesher modestly, with no introduction-- just a bit of music from band.

Many of songs were taken from his first solo album, “Leslie Odom Jr.,” released two years ago and now getting an obviously warranted re-release.

Truth to tell, with his trouser cuffs fashionably high, he looked like a kid at confirmation.

While his combo (an earth shaking Michael Mitchell on piano, Senfu Stoney on percussion, Eric Brown on Drums, Orlando Le Fleming on bass and Steve Walker on guitar) churned with samba and calypso beats, Odom focused on his instrument.

David Wiegand is an assistant managing editr and TV critic of the San Francisco Chronicle.
