Kansas primary races center on schools, lawmaker's demeanor
(AP) — Funding for Kansas schools is a key issue for moderate Republicans hoping to recapture legislative seats from conservatives in Tuesday's primary, and U.S. Rep. Tim Huelskamp is urging GOP voters to see his supposed cussedness as an asset.
More than two-dozen incumbent Republican legislators face primary challengers, and most of them are small-government conservatives who've continued to support GOP Gov. Sam Brownback's experiment in slashing income taxes as an economic stimulus.
Democrats and Republicans were choosing their nominees for the U.S. Senate, congressional races, legislative seats and hundreds of county offices.
Legislative races still are shaped by an ongoing debate over massive income tax cuts Republicans approved in 2012 and 2013 at Brownback's urging.
