Woodminster gets jazzy with ‘Chicago’
[...] in its 50th year, Woodminster Summer Musicals continues its season with the musical about the men who “had it comin’” — or more specifically, about the ladies who gave it to ’em.
Based on a 1926 play by Maurine Dallas Watkins about her real experiences as a crime reporter in a famously corrupt city, “Chicago” follows man killers Roxie Hart (Deborah Leamy) and Velma Kelly (Christine Marie Capsuto), who meet in Cook County Jail, where your chance of freedom directly correlates with the amount of limelight you can earn or steal, and there’s only so much of both to go around.
Woodminster performs Fred Kander’s score with a live orchestra, and Lainie Sakakura, a Bob Fosse expert — she re-created more than 70 of his works for the Broadway show “Fosse” — choreographs.
