Giants send Peavy to the bullpen to open rotation spot for Moore
Newly acquired left-hander Matt Moore will start the series finale on Philadelphia on Thursday, and Jake Peavy is the odd man out.
Manager Bruce Bochy said Tuesday that Peavy will go to the bullpen.
Bochy said it was hard to tell Peavy he was being pulled from the rotation, particularly because of their long relationship going back to San Diego, but that Peavy took it well.
Peavy was not immediately available for comment, but he was bubbly in the clubhouse before batting practice.
The choice was between Peavy and Matt Cain, but Bochy said Cain’s last start showed his form is close to where it was in the three starts before he injured his hamstring.
Peavy was 5-9 with a 5.47 ERA in 21 starts.
Samardzija will be pushed back a day and will take Peavy’s scheduled turn in Washington on Friday night.
Moore has arrived and will wear uniform No. 45, giving up the 55 he wore in Tampa Bay.
Moore said he did not mind and no emotional attachment to 55, the number he was handed when the Rays called him up the first time, so he was happy to take 45.
