Stanford men’s basketball team faces tough schedule

Under new head coach Jerod Haase, the Stanford men’s basketball team will face his alma mater, Kansas, on the road Dec. 3 as part of a nonconference schedule that was announced Tuesday.

In addition to Kansas, the Cardinal could face five other teams that earned a berth in the 2016 NCAA Tournament away from campus:

The final nonconference road game will be a Dec. 19 matchup in Dallas against SMU, which won 25 games last season.

Applying a mathematical forumula to 80 years of Associated Press college-football polls, the news service has determined that Ohio State is the top program of the polling era, followed by Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Alabama and USC.

The defending national champion Stanford men took 20 of 24 first-place votes to sit atop the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s Preseason Top 25 poll.

Jeff Parker scored 26 points and Roy Giles 25 to lead S.F. City to a 106-104 victory over Bay City in a San Francisco Pro-Am playoff game at Kezar Pavilion.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. will miss at least two more NASCAR races while he recovers from a concussion.
