Josh Reddick trade hard to take for A’s Bob Melvin
ANAHEIM — Bob Melvin has seen plenty of A’s come and go during his time as manager, but a few are tougher to take than others, and Josh Reddick was right at the top of that list for the A’s manager.
Asked about the deadline trade that sent Reddick and Rich Hill to the Dodgers, Melvin said, It’s not a great feeling, but we kind of put ourselves in this position.
The front office’s job is always to balance the now and the future, and we felt like we got some significant pieces and needed to make the move because it didn’t sound like we were going to sign either of our guys.
Hill was 9-3 with a 2.25 ERA, so if you just look at it performance-based, you’re losing your best starter this season and arguably your best all-around position player.
With Hill’s departure, Jesse Hahn will be recalled to start Thursday.
Dillon Overton will start Friday against the Cubs at the Coliseum.
Hill said Tuesday that he had enjoyed his time with Oakland, and I’ll sincerely miss the guys, the coaches and the fans.
The team talked to him about an extension last week — it’s believed Hill was looking for two years and roughly $28 million — and Oakland is no stranger to the notion of re-signing starters after the season, doing so with Bartolo Colon in 2013 and having discussions with Scott Kazmir last winter.
Starter Henderson Alvarez, still out after last year’s shoulder surgery, saw a specialist Tuesday in Dallas. ...
Eric Sogard (knee) took some dry swings, not hitting a ball; he has yet to begin running.
Reliever Andrew Triggs (calf) was reinstated from the disabled list and J.B. Wendelken sent back to Triple-A Nashville.

Utilityman Tyler Ladendorf, recalled Tuesday, is newly bald; he shaved his head in solidarity with his grandma, Judy, who received her final chemotherapy treatment last week as she deals with cancer.
Judy Ladendorf helped Ladendorf’s mother, Linda, raise him.
