Scott Dixon wins; Simon Pagenaud nears IndyCar title
Unless his Team Penske teammate Will Power stages a remarkable comeback in the last race of the IndyCar Series season, Simon Pagenaud should emerge from the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma in two weeks with a season championship.
“We’ve had some dominant wins like this on ovals,” Dixon said after his 40th victory overall moved him alone into fourth place on the career list.
Josef Newgarden was second, followed by Helio Castroneves, Conor Daly, and Sebastien Bourdais.
Pagenaud finished seventh — he was running fifth with 10 laps left, but had to back off to save fuel in the closing laps.
Nico Rosberg won the Italian Grand Prix virtually unchallenged after Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton wasted pole position with a poor start.
Rosberg, who started second, took the early lead and cruised to his seventh win of the season, second straight this year and first of his career at the storied Monza circuit, which has hosted more Formula One racing than any other track.
John Hunter Nemechek knocked Cole Custer from the lead to earn the win in a controversial finish in the NASCAR Truck Series at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park in Bowmanville, Ontario.
Custer twice held off Nemechek on late restarts, but was bumped with two turns remaining before an aggressive door-to-door drag race through the grass to the checkered flag.
