Davis Webb impressing early for Cal
Davis Webb returned to the ANZ Stadium locker room in Sydney on Aug. 27 to find his iPhone inbox full of congratulations.
Not about Cal’s season-opening victory, but about his boy-band good looks.
The image shown on the ESPN telecast, which featured the Texas Tech transfer — hair quaffed, eyebrows furrowed as he pointed both index fingers at the camera — was posted to BarstoolSports.com with the headline, “If Your Girlfriend Is Missing It’s Because Cal QB Davis Webb Took Her.”
In his first collegiate start since Oct. 25, 2014, he completed 38 of 54 passes (70.4 percent) for 441 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions.
Said offensive coordinator Jake Spavital: It’s never as good, and it’s never as bad, as you think.
Most summer days, he arrived at the football offices around 7 a.m. and left after 10 p.m. Webb organized daily passing drills with the Bears’ young receivers.
“He came in and everyone respected him from the get-go, really,” said wide receiver Chad Hansen, who had 14 catches for 160 yards and two touchdowns against Hawaii.
Led by 2015 Mountain West Defensive Player of the Year Damontae Kazee, the Aztecs held FCS New Hampshire to 70 passing yards in a 31-0 win Saturday.
