Half Moon Bay’s win is filled with drama
Everything about the game was entertaining.
The 81 points, 769 yards, 45 first downs, two late comebacks and the trick play to key Half Moon Bay’s 41-40 Peninsula Athletic League Ocean Division win at Sequoia-Redwood City on Friday.
“If you are a fan of high school football, this was a great one between two teams that wouldn't give up,” Half Moon Bay coach Keith Holden said.
Sequoia (3-4, 2-1) seemed down and out, but behind quarterback Nick DeMarco (21-for-37, 304 yards, five touchdowns), it rallied from a 35-26 deficit in the final four minutes to take a 40-35 lead with 30 seconds left.
No problem for The Chronicle’s No. 22 team.
The Cougars (7-0, 3-0) drove 52 yards in five plays, capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Gavin Tomberlin to Jake Quosig.
A 31-yard hook-and-lateral that went from Tomberlin to Hayden Von Almen, who pitched the ball to Quosig, set up the game winner, which came with five seconds to play.
Quosig rushed 23 times for 154 yards and two scores and added four catches, 50 yards and two more TDs.
Teammate Chase Hofmann added 30 carries, 122 yards and two scores.
“You have to give Sequoia credit,” Holden said.
[...] our players showed a lot of heart and executed extremely well in the last 30 seconds.
Kennedy watch:
Kennedy-Fremont and Kennedy-Richmond each recorded big road wins to take control of respective league races.
Darius Moses didn’t get into the end zone, but he rushed 14 times for 177 yards, and teammates Vincent Larsen and Zedric Petitt-Brown scored TDs to lift Kennedy-Fremont (7-0, 4-0 Mission Valley Athletic League) to a 14-7 win at Moreau Catholic-Hayward (5-2, 3-1), which got 20 carries and 80 yards from Jullen Ison.
Kennedy kept Ison, who entered with 1,571 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, out of the end zone.
Onijai Sellers accounted for his team’s only score on a 30-yard TD pass to Josh Pullum.
Larsen scored the game-winning TD on a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter and teammate Trey Smith intercepted his second pass to seal the win.
Kennedy-Richmond (6-1, 2-0 Tri-County Stone) recorded its second straight shutout with a 10-0 win at Hercules (6-1, 1-1).
Devin Holmes scored the only touchdown on a fumble return and Kennedy’s defense had 17 tackles for losses, six by 6-foot-2, 220-pound linebacker Ryan Robinson.
Brookshire watch:
Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa quarterback Jordan Brookshire continued his big senior season Friday in a 50-7 win over Montgomery-Santa Rosa.
The 6-2, 205-pounder completed 9 of 11 passes for 253 yards and three touchdowns, and ran for 58 yards and two scores — all in the first half.
Brookshire has completed 115 of 151 passes for 1,671 yards this season and 16 TDs.
