Otto driverless truck delivers beer in Colorado
In the ultimate beer run, an autonomous truck from Uber’s Otto division piloted itself down 120 miles of Colorado highway last week to haul 51,7444 cans of beer while a driver relaxed in the sleeper berth.
The Colorado Department of Transportation agreed to let the truck hit the highway with no one in the driver’s seat.
The shipment from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs, which occurred during the wee hours Thursday, was a stunt to highlight how Otto hopes to transform trucking by outfitting big rigs with cameras, radar and laser sensors to “see” the road.
The demonstration with Anheuser-Busch — reportedly the first commercial shipment delivered by a self-driving truck — also underscores a new direction for Uber and Otto: handling freight logistics.
