Cal basketball extends Martin’s contract to ‘21
Cal men’s basketball coach Cuonzo Martin on Tuesday agreed to a contract extension that will keep him in Berkeley through the 2020-21 season.
The increase in pay was funded by donations, and the contract will include academic incentives, the source said.
Martin went 41-26 in his first two years with the Bears, including last season’s NCAA Tournament trip as a No. 4 seed - the highest regional seed in school history.
The Bears led the Pac-12 in scoring defense (67.3 points per game), defensive field-goal percentage (39.6) and fewest three-pointer allowed (5.4 per game).
For the continued success of our men’s basketball program, it is important that we make a proper investment, and given the levels of accomplishment have seen through his first two seasons in Berkeley, we are excited about the direction we are heading with Cuonzo as our coach.
Potential lottery pick Ivan Rabb wore a protective boot on his left foot while sitting out Tuesday’s practice, but Martin said it was just precautionary.
